Behind the scenes

Cash Shit Lyric Video.

Synopsis

Rapper NBA YoungBoy returns to the rap game with his first album as a free man since 2020 with Make America Slime Again, proving his status and longevity in the game and quieting the seemingly growing base of doubters. In the boastful and confident track ‘Cash Shit’ he lets the audience know he's “back in that mode” with an energetic tone, a fast and quickly changing flow, and braggadocious lyrics

In absence of an official music video, my ambition was to create a lyric video that captured the essence of the song, matching its pacing, energy, and mood.

Phase One

Ideating.

While looking for inspiration and thinking of ideas for this project I knew I wanted to create something that matched the darker, more sinister sounds that not only the track produced but also the aesthetic the artist brings to his catalog and image as a whole. Focusing in on the intro sample of the song, I felt myself leaning into the ‘Wizard of Oz’ imagery and the emerald green associated with both the Emerald City and YoungBoys “slime” branding.

Phase Two

Sketching.

While moving on to sketching still frames, I began to lean into the darker and 'gang/mob' like tones, using various typefaces and different textures.  Inspired by the 'Wizard of Oz', I kept the composition to the same aspect ratio as classic CRT TVs and went for a slightly 'lower-resolution' look.

Phase Three

Producing.

Along with animating the lyric videos typography, I worked with multiple different layers of color-corrections and effects to make it feel similar to old 80s and 90s horror films, connecting to the artists brand aesthetic.  For the intro/outro while the sample plays, I decided to model out a scene in Blender made of multiple CRT TVs and a green American flag (inspired by the albums title: 'Make America Slime Again') to help set up the scene and bring the audience into the scene.
